RESOLUTION

ON ILLEGITIMATE UNION IMPOSED BY RUSSIA ON BELARUS

The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania,

having regard to Resolution No XIII-3281 of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania of 18 August 2020 on the Situation in the Republic of Belarus following the Falsified Presidential Elections, in which the Seimas called on the leaders of the Republic of Lithuania, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission and the European Parliament as well as the national parliaments and governments of EU Member States and NATO countries urging to deny recognition of the results of the falsified elections held in Belarus on 9 August 2020 and likewise to deny recognition of President Alexander Lukashenko as a legitimate leader of Belarus and inviting to call for holding In Belarus new, transparent and democratic presidential and parliamentary elections,

noting the continuing coercion and violence by the illegitimate leader of Belarus against citizens of his own country, the refusal to engage in dialogue with them and the attempts to hastily legitimise his illegitimate power in exchange for the loss of sovereignty of Belarus and its union with Russia,

calls on the international community:

1) to support the demand by Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the leader elected by Belarusian people, and by the Coordination Council established at her invitation as the only legitimate representatives of the Belarusian people for new, transparent and democratic presidential and parliamentary elections;

2) to consider any action of illegitimate leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in the domestic and foreign policy aimed at legitimising his power and concluding new international agreements with Russia which restrict the sovereignty of the Belarusian people as a crime against his people, null and void and not recognised by the international community – de facto annexation of the country;

3) to demand that the Russian Federation refrain from interfering in the domestic and foreign policy of Belarus, not to uphold the actions of the illegitimate leader of Belarus in attempting to conclude new cross-border treaties that would restrict the sovereignty of the Belarusian people;

4) to impose additional sanctions against the Russian Federation and the representatives of the illegitimate leader of Belarus in the event of attempts to unlawfully restrict the country’s sovereignty against the will of the Belarusian people;

5) to offer the Belarusian people and its legitimate representatives a range of political, economic, financial, visa facilitation and other assistance measures after holding in the country new, transparent and democratic elections.
